NEWS RELEASE:

NALC Governor’s Award Presented to Des Moines Executive

November 6, 2000, Rosemont, Illinois At its Fall Conference held in Tucson, Arizona on October 18-21, the National Alliance of Life Companies (NALC) presented the Governor’s Award to Graham J. Cook, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Homesteaders Life Company, Des Moines, Iowa.  The NALC presents the Governor’s Award annually to a person who has shown lifelong dedication to small life insurers and the life insurance industry as a whole.

Mr. Cook has had a long and distinguished career in the life insurance industry.  He has been employed by Homesteader’s Life since 1966.  Since then, he has been active beyond his own company through his involvement in policymaking organizations including the NALC.  He served as President of the NALC from 1996-97, when he led the organization through a time of renewal and revitalization and created a deeper level of member involvement.  He has also served on the NALC board of directors.

The Governor’s Award was presented by the first recipient, Harry Lee Waterfield II, President & Chief Executive Officer of Investors Heritage Life Insurance Company of Frankfort, Kentucky.  The co-presenter was the award’s 1999 recipient, George Quist, President of Security National Life Insurance in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The Governor’s Award is named for Mr. Waterfield’s father, former Kentucky Governor Harry Lee Waterfield because of his commitment to the advancement of smaller life insurance companies.  Elected as Kentucky’s Lieutenant Governor in 1955 and 1963, he served two years as acting Governor in the elected Governor’s absence.  The senior Mr. Waterfield founded Investors Heritage Life Insurance Company in 1960, and served as its President and CEO until his death in 1988.  During that time, he served for 11 years on the NALC Board of Directors.  Governor Waterfield brought the NALC through crisis times, and is partly responsible for the current strength of the organization.

Mr. Cook received his Bachelor’s Degree from Drake University in 1969.  He and his wife, Catherine Bennett,  Senior Analyst for The Principal Financial Group, reside in Des Moines.
